Fred Jones and his Canberra in 1955

Out of the DV Window

At last, some Canberra and some B-29 Washington stuff arrived in the in-tray - and how welcome it was! Ever since my stint as editor of this newsletter began, way back in 2006, I have been conscious that two eras of Squadron history have received scant attention. The culprit is in no way down to any lack of interest, far from it, but simply the fact that, until now, nothing has emerged from our membership to remind us of these two excellent aircraft. Happily, this has now been remedied by an interesting piece from the late Fred Jones about Canberra operations during the Suez crisis, swiftly followed by John King’s fond reminiscences of his time on B-29 Washingtons.

Elsewhere in this issue we have reported on the ever-popular 44 Squadron Golf Tournament and there is a personal report from the Chairman, whose recent travels have included a visit to the graveyard at Skagen, where the the crew of one of our Hampdens can be found. A full account of the aircraft’s loss can be found in the last newsletter.

Sadly, we have to report the
death of John Hathaway, a long-serving and loyal committee member. John’s amiable presence will be sorely missed.

Reunion 2020 Cancelled

15 - 17 may

Regrettably, the 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron Association annual reunion, planned for the weekend of 15 - 17 May 2020, has had to be cancelled for reasons that will be obvious to all. If you have already responded to the Secretary, your cheques will be returned.. The amounts of any cheques that may have already been presented to our bank will be refunded in full to the individuals concerned. Hopefully, annual reunions will resume without hindrance in 2021.

Updating Changes of Address. A small but increasing number of newsletters are making their way back to the Secretary after the Post Office has been unable to deliver them. Please remember to update the Secretary on any change of address, or change of circumstances.

Email Addresses. The Secretary would be grateful if members would advise their current email addresses so the membership handbook can be updated. This information will be used only for membership purposes and will not be disclosed to third parties.

Membership Fees. Despite rising costs, the membership fee has been held to a modest £10 annually. A small number of members are still contributing much less than that and the Secretary would be most grateful if cheques, standing orders or direct debits could be updated to reflect the current subscription. Please remember that membership fees are due by the 1st of November.

Membership Push. To reinforce the combined pleas of our President and our Chairman, please encourage your old Vulcan mates to join the Association and come along to our reunions. We really do need an infusion of new members, whether from the Vulcan, or any other era.
